Volunteer FAQs

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
You must be at least 16 to work on the construction site (under age 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult).
You must be at least 14 to work in the ReStore. Get ideas for various youth projects.

Do I have to register with HFHSTW prior to going to the job site?
Yes, either online or by calling the volunteer coordinator at 985-893-3172, ext. 222.

Do I have to have previous construction experience?
No.  There are skilled individuals on site who will lead you in construction tasks.

After I submit my on-line registration form and review the orientation, what is next?
Individual Volunteers: Use the Online Volunteer Calendar  to schedule your days. Call the Volunteer Coordinator with any questions: 985-893-3172, ext. 222.
 
Group volunteers with more than 5 participants: Use the Online Volunteer Calendar , select the "Schedule My Group" option  and complete the online "Create a New Group" process to create a new group.

Who should I look for when I arrive on site?
Check in with any member of our site team when you arrive.  Individuals on our site team should be wearing an orange HFH t-shirt.

Is water provided on site?
Yes. Please either bring your own water bottle with a cap OR bring $10 to purchase your own Habitat STW aluminum water bottle.

Do I have to be there at 8:00 when they begin?
Yes.  When we start in the morning your construction supervisor will conduct a safety talk and hand out job assignments.  If you are not there first thing in the morning, you will not be familiar with what is going on and all of the volunteer jobs may be filled.

On my first day, can I just arrive on the construction site?
No. On your first volunteer day, please arrive at the ReStore (1400 North Lane, Mandeville, LA) at 7:45 a.m. to sign in and turn in your forms to the volunteer coordinator.

What should I wear?
Closed-toe tennis shoes or boots are required.  Clothes you don't mind getting dirty are strongly encouraged.  Light colored, cotton clothing and a hat are recommended for the summer. Long pants are required for safety.  Layered clothing is recommended for the winter.  Jewelry is not allowed, because it can get damaged or lost very easily. Jewelry (it can get damaged or lost easily), purses, children under the age of 16, and pets.

What should I bring to site?
Upon the arrival of your first volunteer day, please turn in your completed volunteer information sheet and liability waiver .
Please bring a reusable bottle with a top (water is provided on site). Bring your lunch or money to buy lunch (Habitat does not provide lunch). Suggested items to bring: work gloves, sunscreen, mosquito repellent. If you choose to bring your own tools, please make sure they are labeled.

Do I have to stay on site all day?
Individual Volunteers:
We prefer to have volunteers stay all day, but it's not required.  If you are unable to stay all day, let your construction supervisor know as soon as you check in.
 
Group Volunteers with more than 5 participants: Yes, we would like groups to stay all day. If you have special circumstances you may contact the volunteer coordinator prior to your scheduled day.
