CONSTRUCTION: Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project Dahlia Street Home Dedication (Five Families)
Local Effort Also Commemorates Habitat Activist’s 25 Years of Service
For the 25th year, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, called attention to both the need for affordable housing and Habitat for Humanity’s work to help low-income families realize the goal of homeownership. This year’s Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Project was held along the Gulf Coast, May 11-16 from Houston, TX to Mobile, AL Celebrating her 25th anniversary along with the Carters is HFHSTW’s own Marilyn Wenzel. A longtime volunteer at the Habitat Home Store in Covington, she has also served as Board President, participated on numerous committees and facilitated real estate acquisitions. In 2006, Wenzel was awarded Habitat for Humanity International’s highest honor. She was one of only two people in the world that year to be presented with the Pioneer in Excellence Award.Wenzel’s service also includes working side-by-side with President Carter on several builds throughout the country. Because of her close ties to this specific project, HFHSTW is honoring her quarter-century of volunteerism with “Friends of Marilyn” sponsored homes that are being built as part of the Carter Project. These two homes have been totally financed by community members eager to celebrate volunteer Marilyn Wenzel’s 25th anniversary with Habitat for Humanity. (Read more about "Friends of Marilyn.") View Larger Map More than 300 volunteers from across the United States, the UK, Japan and Australia have partnered with Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West to build ten houses in West Abita Nursery in Covington as part of the five-day home build. An additional 20 homes will also be completed this year in West St. Tammany as part of the Carter Project. HFHSTW President & CEO Maureen Clary said the five-day build continues the aggressive posture of the affiliate over the last two years. “We have been blessed with generous volunteers and donors who have helped in our recovery efforts. We need this continued support as we work to build another 100 homes in the next two years.” Sponsorships are needed to fund construction both during the work week and after.
